The doll room is just so tiny that trying to make it multifunctional is an exercise in futility. The lack of space meant I was completing nothing. The picfics were going months between episodes, I still haven’t made my wedding album (2 years in September), and I just got about 15 albums from B’s late father and aunt that have to be restored. I need SPAAACE!! I will take pics when it’s all nice and clean, and I’ll make sure to get one that shows how tiny the room is. Maybe 7 feet wide if that, tiiiiiny.

I’ve also gone through the doll clothing and separated it by who it belongs to. That actually gave me something to do with the boxes. I’m keeping each doll’s wardrobe in the box for that doll (except the boys, just one boy box).  It’s also let me know which characters are sorely lacking in the clothing department.  The most fleshed out wardrobes belong to Carmilla and Oryx, considering they’re the most fleshed out characters as well so far, I’m not surprised.

Along with all the other characters, I’m putting together a wardrobe for my totally awesome new T2…Principessa! I am so happy I finally got her.  I won $700 in a poker tournament, B told me I should definitely buy a doll, and I thought “this is the perfect, and perhaps only opportunity I’ll get to buy her.”  For the first time I really utilized a “wanted” style post, and it was answered!  I paid regular market for her, but I had the money so I didn’t haggle, I just wanted my girl.

I’m now buying up a bunch of Monster High to steal their shoes.  Well, not really. I’m collecting some of the MH girls (because how could I really say no to a readily available, inexpensive vamipire doll?) and trying to purchase just outfits of the girls I’m not actively collecting. Basically, I buy every Draculaura outright because I want a complete Draculaura set. For the others, I try to buy the outfit (I just got Ghoulia’s outfit on ebay) or just the shoes. Last resort, I buy a doll to strip.  At the end of this collection, I intend to have one of each doll represented, and every Draculaura.  This all discounts Cleo, as I don’t like her. I don’t think a character who’s basically just a regular Egyptian girl is interesting or monstrous enough. Also, the boys. The boys in this line leave much to be desired. Holt looks like a comic book character, and the only single Deuce coming out looks ridiculous. I’ll end up with a Clawd Wolf because he comes in a set with Draculaura. Right now I just have Gloom Beach Draculaura and first wave Frankie (wearing a Fearleading uniform, as her original clothing was stripped for a Dal and my Street has her shoes). I did have more, but I wanted to start over just getting the ones I want (some were straight impulse purchases), so I traded them all to a friend for Catherine, my Bonita.

I’m so glad there are shoe options for T1/T2 dolls. I love Ghoulia’s high-heeled knee high Chuck Taylor look-alikes, Princi is going to look killer in them.  I’m glad I just got the outfit for Ghoulia, so I can outright buy her Dead Tired issue with the awesome box of snack food brains. Ah, finally. A playline where the fashion doll is eating brains.

“Oh! You didn’t have any gel, liquid, or aerosols, right?”
“Well, there’s a small aerosol hairspray and some liquid makeup.”
“Oh…well..*shrug*”

Hm. Good to know all those ridiculous regulations actually mean something. Oh, wait, I guess they don’t. I guess it’s just arbitrary rules to inconvenience people under the guise of safety and no one is actually any safer! I suppose that’s a lengthy rant for another day. Point is, both ways I was subjected to a metal detector and an x-ray of my bag. No pat downs, no image scans.

The downside of my airline was that I would’ve been charged $30 each way if I wanted to bring luggage (same price for checking a bag as it was for the overhead compartment!). So, I didn’t. I had to pack everything into a bag no bigger than 16x14x12. I managed it! It wasn’t easy, but I did it.

The plane was all set to take off, but then there was a mechanical problem, so we ended up waiting on the runway for over an hour. When we finally landed, there were so many people without luggage that I figured the people with stuff in the overheads would be conscientious enough to wait until other people were off before holding up the line, but I was very wrong. Even though the last time I flew, I waited for people to get by before getting my bag, I guess I should be used to the fact that people in this world just aren’t polite to each other. I ended up missing the shuttle and waiting another extra hour, not checking in until around 9 pm. (I did remember this when returning, and just sat in my seat until all the people in front of me got their luggage and finally lumbered off the aircraft before I got up.)

Here in Philly, it had been about 90 degrees all week, so I packed for 90 degree weather. When I got to Chicago, it was COLD!! And I had nothing but light tshirts and capri pants!! Luckily, the longest I had to stay outside was waiting for the shuttle. Once inside the hotel, it was fine. In my bag, I’d remembered just about everything. The only thing I’d forgotten was…bum bum BUMMM!!! My camera!! NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! So all my pics are from my camera phone.

I showed up just as everyone was settling in for the Friday night teaparty, and got to see a few of the interesting little desserts picked up at the asian mall where some of the PUDDLE peeps had dinner. The lovely Babelglyph taught me a bit about tea (and was my roomie!) and we had our first hangout where I met TrueFan and ravenwcatz in person (waves!) It should be noted at this point that the jaccuzzi was out of service for the ENTIRE weekend!!!

We went to bed that night somewhere between 10:30-11, and got up at around 7:30 am which Trillian is not used to doing at all! I was totally groggy until I made coffee. The morning was spent setting things up, and with me running back and forth to the room for things I’d forgotten because, as I said, early morning is not my friend. I was at a table with babelglyph, ravenwcatz, DelightfulFreak, Zakuro/Matsuda, and TrueFan was technically at our table, but hardly sat down.  Gift bags were gotten, and I got a bunch of cool stuff! My favorite item was the cute little crane jumper by effiethedal. My second favorite was the awesome artwork on the bag, which was a picture of Charlotte Dal by DelightfulFreak.

Ravenwcatz was discussing in chat the dolls she needed, and it was suggested why not bring them all? So she did! She brought 14, by far the most at our table, in the running for the most at the event! I brought Oryx and Silas, Babelglyph brought 9 girls, among which were Lark and Lola.

DelightfulFreak brought lots of her dolls as well, including Mori! My favorite! Next time she has to bring Levi too, as the two of them just seem to fit together. Yes, I know, they’re just friends, but still!

First, if memory serves, was the BST. I traded my Nosferatu wig for a Haute NY wig, which is great because Oryx needed a green wig for her collection. I also got a fabulous Leeke World wig for my new Bonita (whom I did not bring to the event, but will post a pic of later).  Sadly my Chill and Principessa stock didn’t sell, nor my Ende or Zuora wigs, but I’m not worried about it. I got a lot of loot from DelightfulFreak, so my Namu Tyler now has boots and won’t have to wear ill-fitting Star Trek boots anymore! I also got (from her) a partial Missionary stock, two really cute stuffed kittens with big heads

After the BST we did the group photo, which for some reason I sat down right in the middle of. Apparently I am secretly an attention whore. I was with Oryx though, so maybe she just rubbed off on me.  I will post the group photo as soon as TrueFan does.

Then we did the door prizes. Apparently door prizes were done differently last year, but this year you got a number in your gift bag, and that was the order in which you lined up for your door prize. The lining up, I think, was a great idea because it got people out of their chairs and mingling. After they got their prize, they were more likely to wander around the room since they were already up.

Anyway, I got number 8. Not all the gift bags were taken, so there were some gaps in the line, putting me at number 4 in line. I decided to take a “mystery bag” that had an assortment of things from the last PUDDLE, so I now have 3 outfits by effiethedal. The crane one will go to Lenore or Ofelia, the turtle dress and pjs will go to Mercy.

While wandering around I picked up a very cute spider dress from KeelyVH for Lucy.

After that, we did the gift swap, which made me kind of sad. I gave a GI Joe outfit, and included a rucksack and an M16 made out of metal. The most valuable part of my gift (and what I considered to be really cool) was this M16 machine gun that opened at the middle of the gun, so you didn’t have to put it over the doll’s head to get it on. Everyone I showed it to thought it was boss, but then it ended up with TrueFan!  Out of all the people at the swap, she was the only one I was 100% certain wouldn’t want it. She said later it’ll probably be in the free box next year.

I got a Liv doll pajama set with slippers that will definitely go to Ofelia. It’s nice and demure but still modern, which is her style.

After the swap I went with ravenwcatz and we got some Quiznos. We came back and sat on the stage with babel and delightful and discussed dolls and doll related things.

Then the setup started for the doll contests, of which I entered Oryx as a modified doll. She did get lots of attention at the tea party with her awesome purple wig and purple outfit (Mir looks good in everything!) . She didn’t win anything, but she did get a vote from someone for best modified.

The winner for best modified was actually a boy belonging to DelightfulFreak, who is on a Volks body (which you don’t see many boy Volks)

Sadly, I don’t remember exactly who all the other winners ended up being.

After the contest was the customization forum and workshop, which turned out really to be a group of us sitting together on the stage doing modifications for inexperienced people. I did an obitsu body on an Angelique for a nice young girl, babel did some chip changes, other simple mods were going on. We all kept commenting on how much fun it was to modify things as a group. Usually when I’m doing it, I’m alone at my desk screaming expletives about where my screws disappeared to.  We were heavily aided by Asashi’s…guy? We’ll go with guy. Asashi’s guy who brought a massive toolkit and a dremel tool which helped bunches and bunches when rebodying the T4 body type.

Then there was the fabulous and awesome Dress Like Your Doll contest. It is truly the staple and calling-card of PUDDLE, whether or not you participate.  I, of course, could not participate as I could not bring any luggage. It is still fun, even just to watch.  I helped out with the contest by hand writing the entry slips when it came to TrueFan and Babelglyph’s attention that no one had brought any. lol It was fine, I was superglad I could help.

There were a total of 9 entries for the contest. You will have to forgive me, as I don’t remember everyone’s names.

This contest was a blast to watch. The best part was when raven flashed us her Melissa garter, and showed that her legs were wrapped in plastic to prevent “staining or melting.”

The final event (not counting dinner) was the raffle. There were 5 dolls raffled off this year, I entered for 2 of them but did not win a doll. That’s fine though, because I DID win an awesome Lunatic Queen framed puzzle which I really, really wanted!!  This year’s Requiem custom went to DelightfulFreak which was so fantastic! I’m glad it went to someone I know (just because it’s cool to know the person who won it, lol), and someone who knows Requiem.

After the prize raffles it was all cleaning and straightening and then off to dinner.

There is Silas with babel’s Chloi at dinner. He was quite the popular guy at PUDDLE this year, Dorian will be plenty jealous!

Dinner was fun, though the fog machine at the bar set off the smoke detector and we all started to clear out before they told us it was okay. I had a turkey burger that was pretty yummy. DeLightfulFreak had to leave early so when we were finished eating, myself, babelglyph, and ravenwcatz went into the lobby and sat down for a while where we were pretty disturbed by the very, very, VERY loud party down the hall.

A while after that we held another tea party/pajama party. We actually had no tea kettle, so everyone brought down their coffeemakers from the rooms to heat the water. We asked for extra cups from the front desk, and the night desk manager asked us to bring him back some tea and biscuits! So of course, we did. Yay for “fancy biscuits.”  He was very nice and very silly, and told ravenwcatz that she “looked very nice in her police dress.”

Hanging out and meeting everyone was the absolute best part of PUDDLE. I will become a staple, as there is no way I could just do this once.

The next morning I had to catch a plane at 6:40 am. So, I got up at 3:45 and got myself together. Luckily I’d packed the night before, so there wasn’t much to grab. This didn’t stop me from forgetting my phone on the bed so I had to wake up babelglyph to open the door for me, but I got to say goodbye. I also left my charger plugged in in the bathroom, and did not remember that at all. I went down to the lobby and waited for the cab, when the cab showed up I decided it’d be a great idea to leave my kindle sitting on the lobby coffee table.

I realized this when I got to security at the airport. Did I mention morning and I don’t get along?

So my PUDDLE experience continues, my kindle is with some nice dolly people who also live in Philly so they won’t have too far to send it.

I’m currently getting ready for the PUDDLE convention! I’m flying out to Chicago all by myself, arriving on Friday evening, returning Sunday afternoon. Since I’m coming in and out from the Atlantic City airport, on Sunday B booked a room so I’ll be coming back from my Chicago vacation to an awesome Atlantic City weekend extravaganza!

I’m a sponsor for PUDDLE, donating 10 pairs of handmade dreadlock barrettes to drum up some interest in my new shop, Dreadful Dollies. I’m also bringing a few items I’m trying to get rid of. Stock wigs for Eos, Nosferatu, Zuora, Xiao Fan, Ende, and a stock wig that I have no idea who it belonged to. It’s Mercy’s old wig. Additionally, partial stock from Principessa and partial stock from Chill. I’m hoping to bring full Chill stock, hopefully I’ll find her polar bear rug and her other boot tonight. I know if I have that rug, I’ll get more for the stock and without the rug it might not sell at all. That rug is awesome.

I definitely have to remember my camera. I’m just going to hate myself if I go without it! I have to do a practice pack and get those last dreadlocks done, then I have to sew them all to the barrettes and they’re ready to go. I need to design and print a business card as well, but I have the design in my head so it’s just a matter of putting it together. I also have to finish the kindle cover for my friend babelglyph. I think that’s all I have left to do.

Ofelia is the eldest of two girls. She has a sister, Lenore, who is one year younger.  Ofelia grew up in an environment where she was encouraged to expand her mind creatively and intellectually. Her father was in textiles and her mother was an acclaimed interior decorator, and they met through a business colleague.

Ofelia’s mother, Katie, was fond of bringing her daughters along when she worked, and it was on such an occasion that Ofelia’s life would take shape.  At a bungalow in Wales, four year old Ofelia wandered from her mother’s side into a side room which contained a piano, and little else.  She climbed onto the bench, and with a chubby finger began tapping out her favorite lullaby.  Katie bought a piano that very day.

Ofelia’s young life then became quickly surrounded by the instrument and by her love of music. Two years later she joined and trained through the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain.  She was widely considered a prodigy and was accepted to the National Youth Orchestra a full three years ahead of schedule.

She and her sister Lenore, who was nearly her equal on the cello, began playing publicly together when Lenore was eight.  At 14 and 13 respectively, Ofelia and Lenore finished composing their first duet.  When Ofelia was in her fifteenth year, she and Lenore were approached by an agent to perform their now several duets all across Europe and the girls began to tour.

A tour that started in Europe turned into a tour of the world. The girls completed their education on the road. Instead of reading about history, they visited it.  Instead of watching movies about the pyramids, they climbed them. When Ofelia had reached twenty,  Ofelia’s life changed yet again.  Her parents had gone out for the evening, and upon returning slid on a patch of black ice and through a barrier into a ravine.  They did not make it to the hospital.

Both girls decided it was time to go home. They’d seen more in their short lives than most people dreamt of, and now they wanted to return to their homeland to lead quiet lives amidst the memories of their parents.  They sold the small flat their parents had moved into, liquidated all their assets and set about building a new home.  It was to be lavish, three floors, two studio spaces, massive kitchen, plenty of room to grow.

They met with a recommended contractor, Yvael, who had built some of the grander homes on the eastern coast of Britain.  Building began immediately for the girls’ new home.  It was scheduled to be complete by the end of the year.  At an appointed arrival time, Ofelia walked onto the land she and her sister had purchased, and toward the house that was to be their new oasis.  What she found was a shell. Bare beams jutted toward an unfinished roof.  Plaster crumbled from what little bit of wall had been erected. Yvael was nowhere to be found, and neither was their fortune.

Ofelia contacted the only person she knew she could. Her maternal cousin Oryx. The three girls had been friends since childhood, and had on occasion turned to one another in times of hardship.  Oryx came through with an invitation to come live with her at the home of Lady Carmilla, a wealthy aristocrat fond of taking in and funding artists.  It was just what was needed to get the girls back on their feet.

The shoot at the graveyard went VERY well. I plan to do another tomorrow if all goes well, Tuesday at the latest.  Maybe I’ll just wait til Tuesday, and Tuesdays will be my outdoor shoot days.  Yes, that sounds good.  Then I will have a chance to take the dolls out one at a time and do something really special with each of them.  I have inspiration and ideas for so many, I actually took seven with me! Yeah, talk about high hopes.  I got done what I really wanted to, though.  I got the final shot needed for chapter one, I finally got a shoot with Marius and a shoot with Dorian.  Next I’ll be taking out Door, since she just got new eyes and she’s another one who hasn’t gotten any real pictures taken of her.  Just a picture in the fic, and in the family shot.

Thinking on it now, I think they all deserve at least one shoot, and I’ll get on that.  I’m glad I finally took out Marius, and I discovered something interesting.  He doesn’t like being the center of attention.  He didn’t pose well without Carmilla, he didn’t look natural or comfortable.  He looks better having other dolls to share the spotlight.  While trying to get a portrait of him, it was difficult to get a shot that looked good. When I did the mini vampire fic, and when I did pictures of him proposing to Carmilla, those shots came very naturally.

I’ve always been mentally resistant to talking about my dolls as people.  They don’t feel or think or act a certain way, it’s just a way I perceive them and what they bring out in me.  But Marius, what Marius brings out and doesn’t bring out as compared to the other dolls, it’s strange.  He just seems so much more tortured.  So much more vulnerable. It just seems to be that he’s uncomfortable under the lens without someone to share it with him.  So, there probably won’t be too many pictures of Marius alone.

Ofelia: I am Ofelia, this is my sister Lenore. We do appreciate your hospitality.

Silas: Think not of it.  It is, however, Lady Carmilla to whom you owe your gratitude. Not that I wouldn’t invite you! No, just that this is her home.
Ofelia: Well, then we will thank you both.

Silas: I’m sure it will be a pleasure to have you around.  This is our maidservant, Door, and she will see your bags to your room.
Ofelia: Thank you very much, Door.
Silas: She can hear you, but she is mute, so please don’t think her rude.

Silas: I hear your cousin coming, please excuse me, she has asked to give you the tour.  Have a lovely afternoon.
Ofelia: He’s so very polite!
Lenny: Mmm…I wonder what you’re like without that stuffy attitude…and stuffy shirt…and stuffy pants…

Oryx: Ofelia! Lenny! It’s been so long!
Ofelia: Too long.

Oryx: I know! It’s just awful what happened, it really is.  First losing Uncle Rhett and Aunt Katie, you know how much I loved your parents.  But this contractor theft on top of it!
Ofelia: Well, we definitely can’t thank you and Silas and Lady Carmilla quite enough.
Lenny: Yeah, we’d be kind of…lost right now. Without you.

Oryx: Well think nothing of it! You’re landing on your feet here, I assure you. And just look at you! Looking so good.  Look at the…black hair…on both of you.
Lenny: Well, it is a family trademark!

Oryx: Yes, yes. I’d quite forgotten about that.  You know what? Hang on here for just a second.

***End notes***  I didn’t want to introduce too many characters at first.  I figured I’d establish the characters I intro’d, the orphans, the stuffy guy who’s slightly bumbling around them, the mute, and…Oryx.  Oryx who can flip from “sorry your parents are dead.” to “look at my hair!” in a single conversation.

Chapter 2 I have written and photographed all the way to Carmilla’s introduction. I haven’t decided yet just how the conversation will go between the three of them. It’s like I know where I’m going, but the journey still has to be planned.

The first couple chapters, the intros, have been the most boring to write. Did I want to do a tour? No, let’s assume they took one without photographing it. Do I want to do formal intros for everyone? Most of them at least, yes, unless I can easily fit into the conversation a description of the character.

I’m introducing 5 in the first episode, and more in the second. By the end of the second chapter, I’ll have the storyline better established. I’m looking forward to it! But right now it’s 2:45 am, and I’m going to bed.

Anyway, without further ado, let’s get into the pictures!

The Parlor

Right now it’s just wallpaper, all the rooms are.  I have a nice silver frame I’m setting against the back wall over the couch as soon as I settle on a picture.  The furniture also has a little decoration that’s supposed to be put into the two holes on the back of the chairs and on the tables, but I’ll be damned if I can find them.  Have to figure something out about that.  The bust there, I don’t remember who it is, I bought it at the thrift store.  I’m not sure if he’ll even stay in that room, but I think he’s cool.  This room, in my opinion, turned out the best, and is the only one I don’t have on my list to redo.

The Dining Room

This room I’ll redo just because of the caption on the wall in the second picture.  “OFF ON AN ADVENTURE”  I didn’t think it would be so visible.  It’s from a pack of fairy/fantasy/renaissance scrapbook paper, as is the rest of the room, and I think it looks cool but I’ll redo it to get rid of the words.  This was one of the first rooms I did, and I got a little better each time so I think if I just do a few rooms over again they’ll be many times better than they are.  I do like the very old world feel of the paper though, like the room hasn’t been redecorated in eons.  I have visions of very uncomfortable, stiff dinners happening in this room.

Mercy's Bedroom

She doesn’t have any bedding yet  because I haven’t decided where I’m going with it.  I think I’ll paint her furniture brown (except for the wheelchair, that’s done with) and do a kind of dusty-rose thing.  Like the bedroom you had when you were a kid that was still pink no matter how old you got and your mom wouldn’t change it from little girl style until you were about to explode?  Wait, was that just me?   On one wall it says “Far, Far Away” and on the other “There lived a beautiful princess”  It’s another selection from the same pack as the dining room.  I think it fits Mercy’s dynamic in the family as the coddled youngster.

The Bedroom of Oryx

Ah, Oryx.  I love her name.  This is her room.  The rug isn’t glued down or anything, so it wrinkled and I didn’t notice til now. :/  Her room will always be a mess.  She fancies herself an artist, and has absolutely no patience for cleaning up after herself.  Julia often takes care of it on her breaks from Mercy because Julia is all starry eyed when it comes to her beloved Oryx.  The spots on the wallpaper are designed that way.

Shh…Ofelia’s napping.  I’m going to add wall decor and such just like the other rooms need, but this room will be largely lacking in personality for a while.  Ofelia and Lenore are supposed to be sudden guests, and mildly uncomfortable in their surroundings so a plainer room fits with that.  Their bedding is made of velvet though, so they can’t be THAT uncomfortable.  And as soon as I finish this blog I’ll be stuffing their mattresses and they’ll be slightly more comfortable, even if they are living in the bedroom from Sister Act.  I also need to add another coat of silver to the beds so they match the vanity a little better.

Yeah, it appears everything’s in the rough-draft stage, but the rough draft is better than no draft.  I’ll touch everything up after I get all the rooms though at least the initial placement and everything has wallpaper.  One step at a time, right?

Tomorrow is my last day of my 40 hr job and my part time job interview went well, but that’s besides the point. The point is, I have 5 rooms of the dollhouse done and ready to be photographed, Oryx has purple hair and a purple dress and is ready to pose, so very soon I’ll have time to set up and take some good shots.

Right now though, I have to clean my kitchen.
